Although this website is not about me and my family, this one page is.

I was born in San Diego, California, and am a graduate of the University of Southern California. I taught in Japan for 18 years before moving to Hawaii. My wife is from Sapporo, Japan. Our son was born in January of 2000.

I am an eleventh-generation American, and through the assistance of the Hinman Family Association, we can trace our roots in England back to about 1580.

My father and my brother were career Naval Officers, but I was never in the Service.

The Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum (formerly known as USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park), located on the shores of Pearl Harbor and adjacent to the Pearl Harbor National Memorial (Arizona Memorial Visitor Center), has been my place of employment since 1995. I created this website in 2005. I am currently the Historian.

Publications

In 2014, Paul W. Wittmer and I published the six-volume reference work, United States Submarine Men Lost During World War II.

In 2019, Douglas E. Campbell and I published The Submarine Has No Friends.

Awards and Acknowledgements

In 2008 I was honored by the Commander Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet, with a citation for service to the submarine community.

Finally, the little Japanese character 亮 (Ryo, meaning "cheerful" or "bright") on the bottom right corner of the pages of this website is my son's middle name.
